France, Greenland Deepen Alliance

(MENAFN) France and Greenland have formalized a letter of intent designed to expand bilateral collaboration on critical minerals and metals, a move that reflects Europe’s growing effort to secure essential resources needed for the green transition and resilient industrial supply networks.

French Minister Delegate for Foreign Trade and Attractiveness Nicolas Forissier revealed Tuesday through a post on the American social media platform X that the accord was signed in Nuuk together with Greenlandic Prime Minister Mute B. Egede.

“A strategic partnership for the future of European energy and industry,” Forissier stated.

According to a statement issued Monday by the Greenlandic government, the initiative is intended to reinforce cooperation between France and Greenland in areas including knowledge exchange, geological mapping, and the responsible management and development of mineral resources.

The memorandum of understanding follows a technical cooperation agreement concluded on March 3 during the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada conference in Toronto. That earlier arrangement was signed between Greenland’s Ministry of Industry and Minerals and the French Geological Survey, BRGM.

Under the new partnership, the inaugural collaborative project will center on geological satellite surveys across Greenland. Officials indicated the effort is expected to deliver “new and deeper knowledge” regarding the region’s geological composition while also assisting future exploration strategies.

The partnership is additionally expected to encourage joint initiatives throughout critical metal supply chains, advance environmentally responsible mining methods, and deepen cooperation in scientific research and educational programs.

Greenland possesses extensive deposits of rare earth elements and other strategically valuable minerals that are becoming increasingly important for clean energy systems, electrification technologies, and advanced industrial manufacturing.
