US Rejects Most Mexico Extradition Requests, Sheinbaum Demands Reciprocity

(MENAFN) Mexico has called on the United States to ensure reciprocity in extradition matters, citing hundreds of outstanding requests that remain unresolved, according to statements made Tuesday.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said that Washington has rejected or failed to act on a total of 269 extradition requests submitted by Mexico, raising concerns over what she described as an imbalance in bilateral legal cooperation.

Speaking during her daily briefing, Sheinbaum said:
“There has been no extradition of any of these alleged criminals to Mexico. In other words, what Mexico has always asked for — at least under our administration — is reciprocity. Why have none of them been extradited if these are significant cases and reciprocity exists?”

According to official figures covering January 2018 through May 13, 2026, Mexico has submitted 269 extradition requests to the United States. Of those, none have resulted in transfers, while 36 have been formally rejected by US authorities.

Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco Álvarez said that 183 of the remaining 233 unresolved cases are currently under review by US judicial institutions.

The cases involve allegations linked to organized crime, corruption, and enforced disappearances, according to reports.

Mexico’s government has argued that the lack of action on its requests contrasts with recent US demands for the extradition of ten individuals allegedly linked to Mexico’s ruling political party, further straining judicial cooperation between the two countries.
