German Shipping Firms Call for Security Guarantees in Strait of Hormuz

(MENAFN) German shipowners have urged the establishment of strong and coordinated security guarantees to ensure safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, following conflicting reports over its operational status.

The Association of German Shipowners (VDR) said on Saturday that uncertainty in the region is making maritime transport increasingly risky.

“Under these conditions, a reliable and safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz remains unguaranteed,” the association said in Hamburg, adding that shipping companies and crews require stable and internationally coordinated conditions to operate safely.

“Without robust security guarantees, there can be no sustainable normalization of shipping traffic in this region, which is central to global trade,” the VDR said, according to a German press agency.

The statement comes amid contradictory developments regarding the strategic waterway. On Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the strait remains “completely open” for commercial shipping.

However, a separate statement on Saturday attributed to an IRGC joint command indicated that the Strait of Hormuz had returned to its “previous state” under the control of Iran’s armed forces, citing the ongoing US blockade on Iranian ports.
