Iran War Leaves Over 1,000 Tel Aviv Homes Uninhabitable
Israeli media cited Mayor Ron Huldai as saying that "more than 1,000 apartments in Tel Aviv are no longer fit for living" because of damage caused by Iranian missiles and drones.
The destruction unfolded over weeks of relentless exchanges during the US-Israeli war on Iran, which erupted February 28. Tehran launched successive waves of missile and drone strikes against major Israeli cities in direct retaliation for large-scale Israeli and US strikes on Iranian territory. Missiles and shrapnel from aerial interception attempts rained down on Tel Aviv, Ramat Gan, and Bnei Brak — killing and wounding dozens while carving through residential buildings, vehicles, and critical infrastructure.
The financial reckoning is equally staggering. Media reported earlier this week that Israeli officials estimate the combined cost of 40 days of war against Iran and Lebanon at roughly $17.5 billion — a figure that does not yet factor in reconstruction expenses or economic losses stemming from the partial shutdown of the Israeli economy during active hostilities.
Nearly 30,000 Israelis have since filed compensation claims with the Israeli Tax Authority's property damage fund, according to Israeli media. The claims break down as follows: 18,408 related to buildings, 2,594 to equipment, and 6,617 to vehicles — underscoring the breadth of civilian losses.
Israeli economic outlet Calcalist reported last week that a separate 12-day war against Iran in June cost approximately 3 billion shekels ($1 billion) in business compensation alone. The Finance Ministry now estimates that compensation payouts tied specifically to the February 28–April 8 conflict will climb to 6.5 billion shekels.
The ceasefire that halted the fighting took effect April 8, following talks between the US and Iran hosted in the Pakistani capital that ultimately failed to yield a comprehensive agreement to end the war.
