US Moving to Take Control of Strait of Hormuz, Trump Says

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump announced Sunday that Washington has begun active measures to take control of the Strait of Hormuz, as the ongoing war with Iran enters a consequential new phase.

When asked in an interview with Israeli media whether the United States had the capacity to seize control of the strategically vital waterway, Trump left little room for ambiguity, replying: "Yes, sure, it's already happening."

The president also spoke at length about what he characterized as an exceptionally tight working relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the Iran front.

"The coordination is very close. We have a good relationship. It couldn't be better," he said.

Trump further indicated that he believes Tehran is under overwhelming pressure to negotiate, suggesting the battered nation is desperate for an exit.

"I think they want to do (it) very badly. Anybody would want a deal if you are getting decimated, right?" he said.

The remarks come as US and Israeli forces have conducted sustained airstrikes against Iran since Feb. 28, a campaign that has claimed more than 1,340 lives — among them former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran, in turn, has launched retaliatory drone and missile strikes against Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and several Gulf states hosting US military personnel, inflicting casualties and widespread infrastructure damage. The escalating conflict has sent shockwaves through global financial markets and severely disrupted international aviation corridors.
