Touadera Secures Third Term in Central African Republic Elections
Touadera, a former mathematics professor now aged 68, was first elected in 2016 and reelected in 2020 with 53.16% of the vote in the first round.
His ability to run again was made possible by the 2023 constitutional referendum, which abolished term limits and extended the presidential term to seven years.
During his campaign, Touadera highlighted security achievements, attributing them to cooperation with Russian security contractors—reorganized from the Wagner Group—and Rwandan forces. These alliances helped reclaim territory from rebel groups and facilitated peace agreements. The partnerships have also increased Moscow’s influence in the resource-rich nation, granting Russia access to gold, diamonds, lithium, and uranium.
Election day was described as largely calm by international observers, including the African Union and the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), though insecurity persisted in some eastern areas.
Despite this, the main opposition coalition, the Republican Bloc for the Defense of the Constitution (BRDC), boycotted the vote, labeling it unfair. Other challengers, such as opposition leader and former prime minister Anicet-Georges Dologuele and former prime minister Henri-Marie Dondra, accused authorities of restricting their campaigns, including limitations on provincial travel.
