US Approves Record Arms Sale to Taiwan

(MENAFN) The US Department of War has authorized an $11.1 billion weapons sale to Taiwan, representing the largest American military package ever offered to the island. This follows a $330 million agreement in November for aircraft spare parts and maintenance support.

The agreement encompasses eight distinct transactions, including 82 HIMARS rocket systems and 420 ATACMS missiles valued at more than $4 billion. It also covers anti-tank and anti-armor missiles, loitering suicide drones, howitzers, military software, and parts for other equipment, according to information released by both governments and Taiwan’s defense ministry.

China, which regards the self-governing island as part of its territory, has not yet responded to the announcement but has consistently criticized Washington’s ongoing military collaboration with Taiwan.

Taiwan’s defense ministry stated that the acquisitions are intended to help the island maintain “sufficient self-defense capabilities” as the US continues to support it in developing “strong deterrent power” and utilizing “asymmetric warfare advantages,” which it called the “foundation for maintaining regional peace and stability.”

The ministry noted that the package is currently at the congressional notification phase, allowing lawmakers the opportunity to block or modify the sale if they choose.

In a series of statements outlining the deal, the Pentagon said the proposed sales would further US national, economic, and security interests by assisting Taiwan in modernizing its armed forces and preserving what it described as a “credible defensive capability.”
