China launches fifteenth National Games in Guangzhou

(MENAFN) China launched its 15th National Games on Sunday in the southern city of Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, according to reports. The event will run through Nov. 21.

The opening ceremony will be attended by Chinese President Xi Jinping, who also met with International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Kirsty Coventry and IOC Honorary President for Life Thomas Bach ahead of the event. Xi pledged to strengthen “high-level cooperation” with the IOC and said Beijing aims to play an expanded role in global sports governance.

The president also met with some of the nation’s top athletes, praising their contributions to China’s goal of becoming a major force in international sports.

This edition of the National Games is jointly hosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao and features thousands of participants.

“This year’s National Games will showcase not only new sporting achievements in China’s new era, but also the remarkable progress of Chinese modernization in the Greater Bay Area,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning wrote on social media.
