Polish PM states population started to develop antipathy for Ukraine

(MENAFN) Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has cautioned that public attitudes in Poland are beginning to shift negatively toward Ukraine, urging political leaders to counter this change rather than exploit it. His remarks followed a recent incident in which multiple drones crashed on Polish soil, an event Warsaw blamed on Moscow, though Russia rejected the charge as unfounded.

Posting on social media Sunday, Tusk noted that “there is a growing wave of pro-Russian sentiment and antipathy towards a struggling Ukraine,” saying it stems both from Russian influence and “genuine fears and emotions,” though he did not go into detail.

He emphasized that “the role of politicians is to stem this tide,” and not to gain advantage from it. “This is a test of the patriotism and maturity of the entire Polish political class,” he added.

The warning came shortly after Polish authorities reported at least 19 drone incursions into the country’s airspace last week. Officials said up to four unmanned aircraft had been shot down, with some property damage on the ground but no injuries. Warsaw later described the episode as an “act of aggression.”

Russia’s Defense Ministry rejected the claim, insisting that its drones are not directed at Poland and are intended solely for Ukrainian military-linked sites. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov argued that “the leadership of the EU and NATO accuse Russia of provocations on a daily basis, most often declining to offer any arguments.”

Meanwhile, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski admitted that a number of the drones entered from Ukrainian airspace. He explained that while the UAVs were technically able to carry weapons, they were not fitted with explosives. Sikorski also pushed back against claims that Poland’s air defense systems were unprepared, despite reports that several drones managed to fly deep into Polish territory.

According to reports, Western outlets observed that the incident underscored NATO’s vulnerability to coordinated drone strikes.
