Trump Meets with House Republicans to Rally Support for Tax, Spending Bill
Ahead of the closed-door meeting, Trump told reporters that he views himself as a "cheerleader" for the GOP and anticipated a "very good discussion" with lawmakers at this crucial moment for his legislative agenda.
House Speaker Mike Johnson is attempting to manage internal divisions within the caucus over the bill, which includes deep tax cuts, significant spending reductions, a $5 trillion increase in the debt ceiling, major funding for border security, and efforts to loosen U.S regulatory policies.
.
The bill initially failed a committee vote on Friday, with some Republicans joining Democrats to vote it down. However, it passed in an unusually rare Sunday night vote, where several holdouts voted "present," clearing the way for it to move to the full House for further consideration.
Members of the House Freedom Caucus, including Rep. Chip Roy, have indicated that they will require additional concessions before supporting the bill during a floor vote.
Rep. Thomas Massie has remained firmly opposed to the proposal, criticizing its potential to increase national debt.
When asked about Massie’s stance, Trump remarked that he doesn’t think Massie "understands government" but acknowledged the bill’s likely contribution to the deficit, stating, "We have to fix the country."
"I think he's a grandstander, frankly," Trump added. "I think he should be voted out of office. And I just don't think he understands government. If you ask him a couple of questions, he never gives you an answer. He just says, 'I'm a no.' He thinks he's going to get publicity."
