Tanzania Restricts Access to X App
On Tuesday, the official police account was compromised, with explicit content and false reports suggesting that the president had passed away being posted.
In response, the police distanced themselves from the misleading information and confirmed that an investigation had been initiated to locate those responsible for the attack.
Soon after, data from the internet monitoring group Netblocks indicated that X became "unreachable on major internet providers" throughout the country.
While users in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's largest city, still could not access the platform by Wednesday, some individuals in other regions reported being able to log in.
Information Minister Jerry Silaa addressed the issue, confirming the hacking and reassuring MPs in parliament that the affected government social media accounts had been secured.
Earlier, government spokesperson Gerson Msigwa had warned the perpetrators that swift action would be taken against them.
The disruption of access to X comes amid ongoing controversy over the deportation of well-known Kenyan figures, a move that prevented them from attending the court proceedings of opposition leader Tundu Lissu, who faces charges of treason.
