UN Rights Chief Denounces U.S. Forced Deportations to Third Countries
According to US government data, between January 20 and April 29, 142,000 individuals were deported from the country. Among those, at least 245 Venezuelans and approximately 30 Salvadorans were sent to El Salvador, where it is believed many are being detained in the infamous CECOT maximum-security prison.
Volker Turk, the UN's human rights chief, stated, "This situation raises serious concerns regarding a wide array of rights that are fundamental to both US and international law - rights to due process, to be protected from arbitrary detention, to equality before the law, to be protected from exposure to torture or other irreparable harm in other States, and to an effective remedy."
The deportations were carried out under the Alien Enemies Act, with many individuals being labeled as alleged gang members. These deported individuals are currently held in detention, reportedly without access to legal representation or contact with their families. Furthermore, many detainees were not informed about their deportation to a third country, with reports indicating that "many did not have access to a lawyer and that they were effectively unable to challenge the lawfulness of their removal before being flown out of the US."
